Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that impacts the eyes. It arises from damage to the blood vessels within the retina, the light-sensitive tissue located at the back of the eye.
Initially, diabetic retinopathy may present with no noticeable symptoms or only mild vision issues. However, if left untreated, it can progress to severe vision impairment, potentially leading to blindness.
The most effective method to diagnose diabetic retinopathy is through a comprehensive dilated eye examination. During this examination, special drops will be placed in your eyes to dilate your pupils, enabling your doctor to get a clearer view inside your eyes. These drops may temporarily blur your close-up vision until they wear off, which typically takes several hours.
Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment
Diabetic retinopathy is managed through effective systemic control of diabetes and hypertension. In more severe instances, a combination of treatment modalities such as antiVEGF injections, panretinal photocoagulation laser, and vitrectomy surgery may be necessary.
