Intraocular Foreign Body

A foreign body refers to an object in your eye that does not belong there, such as a speck of dust, a wood chip, a metal fragment, an insect, or a shard of glass. These foreign objects are typically found beneath the eyelid or on the surface of the eye.

Individuals most susceptible to experiencing a foreign body in the eye are those engaged in trades such as laborers, woodworkers, machinists, metalworkers, individuals working with motorized tools, and gardeners. It is important not to attempt self-removal of a foreign body from your eye. Instead, seek immediate assistance from your doctor, optometrist, or the nearest hospital emergency department.

Signs of a foreign body in the eye may include:

Acute pain in the eye, followed by a sensation of burning and irritation.
Perception of an object in the eye.
Eye redness and excessive tearing.
Gritty or scratchy sensation when blinking.
Blurred or diminished vision in the affected eye.
Heightened sensitivity to bright lights.
Presence of small blood spots in the white of the eye (subconjunctival hemorrhage).
