Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an ocular condition that can occur in premature infants. It prompts the development of abnormal blood vessels in the retina, potentially resulting in blindness.
What Occurs in Retinopathy of Prematurity?
Retinopathy of prematurity involves the abnormal growth of blood vessels in the eye, which can result in leakage or bleeding. This process leads to the formation of scars on the retina, the nerve tissue layer responsible for transmitting light-related messages to the brain.
As these scars contract, they may exert tension on the retina, causing it to detach from the rear of the eye. In severe instances, this can culminate in vision impairment and, in extreme cases, blindness.
